How to: Add the Emoji Keyboard to iOS (iPhone & iPad)

One question I get asked all the time is “How did you get that smiley face in your text?” They are referring to the little graphics you can add into your iMessages (or anywhere you type on iOS) — these are called Emoji. And they are pretty easy to turn on in iOS…if you know where to look. So, here are the steps to get Emoji’s into your messages (screen shots are from my iPhone but the process works on the iPad as well).

Step 1: Open Settings and go to General.

 Step 2: Click on Keyboard.

Step 3: Click on Keyboards. Yes, this time it’s plural. Most-likely,  you have the number 1 showing here if you’ve never come into this section.

Step 4: Click Add New Keyboard…

Step 5: This takes you to the list of all the language keyboards you can add to iOS. Scroll down until you see “Emoji“, click it.

Step 6: Now when you go back to create a new message you should see what looks like a globe icon next to the 123 button.

Tapping this brings up the Emoji keyboard where you can select any of the graphics you see fit. Simply tap the globe again to return to your default keyboard.

My favorite Emoji’s are the monkeys. What’s your favorite Emoji?
